Can Amino Acids and Peptides Really Seal Damaged Hair?

Whether visible or invisible to the naked eye, damaged hair has real physical gaps: lifted, cracked or missing cuticle scales caused by mechanical stress, chemical treatments or UV exposure.

And before you ask, yes there is a solution: AMINO ACIDS and PEPTIDES.

Depending on their size. amino acids and peptides can address damage in various ways. Smaller amino acids and low molecular weight peptides are tiny enough to move past the hair cuticle and into the cortex, where they can help reinforce the hair fiber's internal protein and moisture-binding structure. On the contrary, larger peptides and hydrolyzed proteins are too big to penetrate deeply, so they work more like a temporary patch. They deposit into and fill the surface-level voids left behind by cuticle damage.

This size-dependent behavior isn't just theoretical it's been demonstrated directly in hair fiber research. A study published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science compared hydrolyzed keratin peptides of different molecular weights on both relaxed and textured hair and found that smaller peptides penetrated further into the fiber while larger ones concentrated at the surface. This combination measurably improved physical properties like tensile strength and manageability in chemically damaged hair. Related research on how polypeptides interact with hair under different chemical conditions has similarly found that peptide size and the hair's chemical environment both shape whether a protein binds mainly to the cuticle surface or moves deeper into the cortex. This is  why we cosmetic chemists often blend multiple molecular weights rather than relying on a single amino acid or protein source.

As a cosmetic chemist, I like to think of this less as 'repair' and more as really good, consistent maintenance. Every wash brings a genuine improvement in feel, shine, and manageability, even though the underlying structural damage is still there. Once we frame it that way, amino acids and peptides stop sounding like a miracle fix and start sounding like what they are: a smart, ongoing part of a conscious hair care routine.
